Once an independent town, Ottensen was part of the Altona borough under Danish rule, which gave the area a unique cultural blend that continues to resonate today. Ottensen remained a separate town until it was incorporated into Hamburg in 1937 and over the decades it became an industrial epicenter with many factories opening here.
As you stroll through cobblestone streets, you will pass independent cafes, quirky shops, and local markets that give it a unique, bohemian feel. The atmosphere is relaxed but with an undercurrent of energy that you can feel, especially on weekends. That’s when the cafes fill up with people hanging out, or locals are grabbing a bite at one of the many cool restaurants. Plus, with the Elbe river just around the corner, you can easily head to the water for a peaceful escape.
If you are into neighborhoods that feel authentic, a little offbeat, but still vibrant, Ottensen definitely nails it.

From the Altona Station you can pass by the commercial Ottenser Hauptstraße with lots of shops; Guzel’s favorite corner is where Ottenser Hauptstraße meets Große Brunnenstraße a bustling area full of cafés and parks that’s perfect for an afternoon stroll. “It’s the perfect spot for a Sunday walk,” she says.
Keep walking and arrive to Bahrenfelderstraße, “a street with its own unique character” according to Shay.
Enrich your discovery of Ottensen by passing by some cute side streets like Rothestraße, Eulenstraße and Große Brunnenstraße. Cristi, a fan of Ottensen’s industrial roots, loves wandering through the streets that lead to hidden courtyards, offering a glimpse into the area’s past. “The charm of Ottensen lies in its hidden corners,” she notes.

There’s no better way to start your day in Ottensen than with a delicious breakfast at one of the neighborhood’s favorite cafés, here the selection of our Community.
Rain Cafeatery - If it is coffee and brunch you are after, Rain Cafeatery is where locals head to sip on expertly brewed cups of the good stuff and eat pancakes or granola bowls. "The service is great, and the food is delicious," Helen says.
Knuth - “The quintessential neighborhood café that feels like home” according to Maddalena. Open all day for everyone, here you will see older guests quietly reading their newspapers, families enjoying a relaxing brunch, and young groups chatting and sipping on their caffè lattes.
Café Rosa - Camilla recommends the matcha at Café Rosa, another must-visit for breakfast or for an afternoon hot drink. Tucked inside the creative space of KULTUR&GUT, this hidden gem offers an industrial urban vibe - and the space is completely painted in pink, this should be enough to convince you.

Ribatejo - Guzel opts for Ribatejo when she’s in the mood for a late Portuguese or Spanish-style breakfast in the weekend. In this café, “You can always chat with the waiters and the owners are awesome people”, she says.
44 QM - To pair your breakfast with a great specialty coffee in a colorful pop place, stop at 44 QM, which Guzel praises for its quality.
Black Delight - The perfect local café, Black Delight will win you over with its welcoming staff and a great selection of both specialty coffee and homemade treats (and natural wine events during the weekend!). Black Delight also offers barista classes!
Klippkroog - Klippkroog is a warm, intimate hangout in Ottensen where locals come together to savor comforting, traditional dishes in a friendly environment — a true reflection of the neighborhood’s communal vibe. Get the carrot cake!
Die Patisserie - For a breakfast on-the-go, Die Patisserie has some of the best French croissants in Hamburg according to Maddalena (disclaimer: Maddalena is not French).
Lunch and Dinner: Ottensen’s Best Eateries
Ottensen’s food scene is as diverse as the neighborhood itself. Whether you’re in the mood for something casual or a little more refined, the options are plentiful.
Kleine Brunnenstrasse – It is a charming, romantic German restaurant that offers the perfect setting for a special dinner celebration or date. Its inviting terrace, illuminated by atmospheric string lights, is especially enchanting in the Spring and Summer months, creating an unforgettable dining experience, paired with a thoughtfully curated selection of natural wines. In Cristi´s words, just “high quality”.
Otto´s Burger: If you are looking for an easy quick meal, Otto's is a great place to enjoy premium burgers made from fresh, high-quality ingredients, available with or without meat, accompanied by crispy fries and homemade sauces. "The inviting atmosphere and friendly staff make it a great place, also for lunch during the week!" according to Maddalena.

Lily of the Valley – “A must-visit when it opens at 11:00 a.m. to get a table!” says Shay. Known for its great ambiance and vegan food.
L'Antica Pizzeria di Michele – Born in Naples, this Italian restaurant is actually a well-known Pizzeria chain in Italy. Here you can grab a simple pizza or a pasta enjoying the easy-going ambience.
Half the Sky – Authentic asian dining experience, where “you must ask for the Chinese menu” commands Cristi.
Maquis – Just outside of Ottensen, it is “the best vegetarian restaurant in Hamburg” according to Shay, offering top-notch dishes in a cozy setting.
Café Olé - “The perfect laid-back yet vibrant atmosphere”, says Maddalena. This easy-going bistro and wine shop has everything you need for a perfect day: from freshly baked cakes to warm meals and sustainably produced natural wines. Whether you are in the mood for a drink, or simply enjoying the sun on their terrace eating an Alsatian Flammkuchen, Café Olé offers an inviting space to unwind.

Zur Traube – A real Weinstube that describes itself as a “Very Fine Wining in Ottensen” Cristi loves this restaurant for its “food and ambience”.
Juan Sin Miedo - With its vibrant and dynamic atmosphere, this taqueria offers an immersive experience that transports you straight to Mexico, with a modern twist.
Die Goethe - It is a rent location recommended by Cristi as she says “this hyper flexible space makes you feel welcome and at home. It’s your extended living room for rent. And once a month, Die Goethe Kantine offers traditional cuisine with a twist.”
Maison Avignon - At this creative French restaurant you can pretend you are in the South of France for a night: the menu offers you to choose between four to six courses, in a welcoming but intimate atmosphere (16 places in total).
Tigre – Known for its Latin, South American food, good vibes, and great energy according to the BBA Community girls, at Tigre the food mirrors the location's lively atmosphere, where an explosion of vivid hues and tantalizing aromas instantly captivates the senses. The dishes, designed for sharing, are a playful fusion of spices and exotic ingredients.
La Casita Azul – Recently opened in 2024, this is a cozy Mexican spot serving up tasty tacos, with a warm atmosphere and owners who are always happy to chat. Pro tip: “during the week you can find a special lunch menu at a great price” suggests Maddalena.

Ottensen Weekly Market: Nestled in the heart of Ottensen on Spritzenplatz, the neighborhood’s weekly market may be the smallest in Altona, but it boasts an impressive variety of fresh produce and artisanal goods.. True to Ottensen’s vibrant and multicultural spirit, this market offers everything from farm-fresh vegetables to gourmet delights. On Tuesday and Friday it hosts the traditional market, while on Wednesdays and Saturdays, there is the organic farmers market.
